What is Instagram Reels?
This is a brand new feature for users to create informal, fun, and engaging videos. These videos, similar to Tiktok, allow users to record 15-second video clips that they can match with a wide range of music or there own audio. These clips can then be shared to their Stories, new Instagram Reels tab, or Explore feed.
Instagram Reels also has it’s own ‘For You’ Page that can be found on the Instagram Explore feed. Instead of seeing only videos of people that you follow, you will see Reels from popular and trending accounts.
The first thing most content creators, businesses, and brands will wonder is what the algorithm is.
But as it’s brand new we are comparing it to Tiktoks algorithm, which is influenced by who you already follow, where you are located, and what content you engage with.
If you’ve had a look at Instagram Reels you might notice a ‘Featured’ label close to the caption of the reel.
My research says that Instagram claims if your Reel is featured in ‘Explore’ you will receive a notification. Reels that get featured will be determined by Instagram to help you discover original content that they hope to inspire and entertain you with.
Besides adding music to your videos there are a few other features within the Reels. Those who are familiar with Titok will know what I’m talking about. There is a video countdown timer, you can speed up or slow down your video, and a choice of video effects.
What’s nice is that you get the option to either upload a video from your own camera roll or you can film clips on the spot.
When you are happy with your clip you can then spice it up with the draw tool or you can choose a sticker from the Instagram sticker collection.
How to create an Instagram Reel
You can find the Instagram Reel mode in your Instagram stories camera menu. If you want to quickly access the Instagram Reels mode you can simply open the Instagram stories camera and find the Reels icon.
To access the music of your choice you can tap on the audio icon. You can do the same to change your video speed, by tapping the speed icon on your screen.
Below those icons, you will see a timer option that will allow you to choose how long your video will be and you will then have a countdown to when your video will start recording.
If you are happy with your video then you can apply a filter, exactly like a story filter you can swipe to apply different filters that you’ve previously saved.
A lot like TikTok, you can start and stop recording as many times as you would like during your 15-second clip by pressing and holding the record button.
When your video is fully completed you choose if you want to edit the cover photo of your Reel with a video thumbnail or any other photo from your camera roll. All that is left to do is share your video, you can do this to your stories, explore feed and the new Reels tab on your profile.
Using Instagram Reels for business
Like most features on Instagram, Reels can be used to build your audience and grow your engagement or reach. It is a fun and creative way to get your audience engaged.
Through Reels, you can show off your business’s personality and give your audience a chance to get to know your business on a fun, not so formal level.
I know a few people that have been using Reels for a week now and they have stated that their engagement has already risen.
We live in a world where everything changes almost every day and new things are created.
If you as a business do not stay updated on things, such as reels, you will lose out on an entire section where you can pick up new engagement.
By creating Reels it allows users to easily start following you when they see your video on the Explore page.
Here are a few reasons you need to hop on to the Instagram Reels now:
Showcase your products
Instagram Reels will allow people that do not follow you to see your content, which is exactly what businesses want!
This is a new opportunity for you to drive more sales and create awareness about your product or brand.
Create content that your audience can relate to
By creating fun and creative clips on Reels you can present fun content that your followers can relate to. This will captivate and entertain your followers while showing off your business.
You can share educational content
Most people enjoy watching videos they can get value from. Reels will allow you to educate users in a fun way. For example, how to edit a photo in 15 seconds, 5 travel tips or, 5 ways to transform your outfit.
